What You Can Do is the title of a new Environmental Programme which is being launched next week on Flirt FM to mark Green Week at NUI Galway. The series, which is independently produced by Sound Woman Productions with the support of the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland's Sound & Vision fund, will look at the various ways in which life in NUI Galway can become more environmentally responsible and thus sustainable.

Exploring issues like energy, organic growing, food production, decarbonising the economy, transport, cycling and recycling; the programme will provide insights into how those spending their days on the NUIG campus can live their lives in a more environmentally sustainable way. The programme will outline the efforts being made by NUIG as an institution to go green, tracking changes currently being made in heating systems, lighting, modes of transport, energy and paper use – all with a view to minimising the impact on the environment.

What You Can Do will also explore various strands of cutting edge environmental research currently being conducted at NUIG. This will feature the work of leading scientists from a range of Galway based research institutes including the pioneering Environmental Change Institute and the new Energy Research Centre.

The programme will also hear from students who are attempting to live sustainably – those refusing to eat meat because of the huge environmental implications of meat production, those cycling to college rather than driving, those whose energy consumption patterns are minimal, those for whom recycling and the efficient use of resources are the norm by which they live.

What You Can Do will be broadcast daily at 12.30 during Green Week 23rd – 27th March. Thereafter the programme will be broadcast weekly on Mondays at 4pm.
